New Vera Wang

{images: david’s bridal}

When I heard the news I couldn’t be more excited. Vera Wang has designed a line for David’s Bridal! The wedding dresses by David’s Bridal are not only whimsical & elegant but extremely affordable. Who said getting a high end designer’s dress had to cost you fortunes. Her new “WHITE” line is absolutely stunning. Every bride should be able to say they wore a Vera Wang at her wedding. Dresses range from $600 – $1300.

Check out their site or visit a nearby location & view the new designs by Vera Wang at David’s Bridal.

The newest trend…sassy…chic…and short! I came to love this new trend more & more as I visited one of my favorite wedding dress designers…Priscilla of Boston.

There is such attention to detail to the dresses & every year I feel like the dresses reinvent themselves providing the bride with a fresh new look & start! I just wanted to feature some of my favorite wedding dresses from the site.

{wedding dresses: priscilla of boston}

So you have the dress…now what to pair it with?…Personally, stylistically I would pair it with bright & bold shoes, sends that pop to the dress.

Just a few more minor details & you are ready to walk down the isle…Another new trend is birdcage veils…I simply adore them & think they look great coupled with short wedding dresses.

So there you have it, a complete look that I would recommend for my brides…and actually myself!

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am when I received an email from a Company called Romantica…they are an exclusive destination wedding planning Company that plans ceremonies & receptions in….SPAIN!!! {most importantly they’ve been doing this for 17 years so you know they will offer the most amazing locations to hold your wedding}…

So their venues are all located in Spain…places such as Madrid & Barcelona…incredible baroque palaces…a medieval castle…a beautiful & quaint country house…or a warm & inviting Cortijo close to the beach!

The venues are not only perfect for ceremonies & receptions…but your guests can stay there too…thus allowing for a truly intimate destination wedding experience not only for you & your partner…but for family & friend!

So if you want to plan something different for your wedding…why not try a destination wedding at one of these incredible venues…

I was looking at some of their venues & had to create a collage of some of the places that I could dream of getting married in! Check them out. They are absolutely stunning…

As part of the new Photographers Featured Series…I am going to try and find different types of wedding concepts…First pick of the Photographer Feature Series is by Corinna Hoffman. I’ve always loved the concept of Trash That Dress & when I saw that she did a gallery just on that I took the opportunity to do an inspirational board.

The trash that dress concept has taken photography by storm…it’s a great way to get down & dirty after your wedding & capture some truly natural, organic & raw pictures. Great concept…& the bride & groom almost ALWAYS look like they are having a blast with it as well.

Corinna Hoffman has clean & creative angles. Crisp images that showcase her eye for color. Thank you Corinne for your submission to be featured on our site…great work!

Some brides take on the name of their new husband…and some brides don’t…but that doesn’t mean that for those who do that it doesn’t have to be a seamless & easy process. Here is an interview with the owner of Name Change Express.

1)       What inspired you to start Name Change Express?

  1. My own personal experience.   After we got married, my wife was incredibly busy, initially with a career at Intel Corporation and subsequently in management consulting with Deloitte Consulting and Booz & Company (formerly Booz Allen Hamilton).  She simply couldn’t find the time to figure out how to change her name and with travelling every week for her consulting career, she finally told me that “if you want me to take your name, then you must do it for me”.
  2. I said sure, how hard could it be and started to look for services to help us through this and not finding any comprehensive service, I came up with the idea of introducing a service to help brides through this.  Since 9 out of 10 brides decide to change their name, we realized that many others could be going through the same difficulties we experienced – we wanted to help.  I conducted market research through my classes in business school and determined that an overwhelming majority of brides surveyed were confused about the name change process and strongly valued services to assist.

2)      What tips would you give to couples pondering name changes?

  1. We recommend that couples discuss one another’s preferences well in advance of the wedding date.  It’s very important to not take for granted what preferences someone may have around changing their name.  While some brides are very excited changing their name, others are unsure if they want to and see it as a way of losing their identity.  Others will also outright say that they will definitely not change their name.  Add to this that some states will require that they declare what they would like their names to be after the wedding when applying for a marriage license, then it becomes even more important to have this discussion early on.
  2. Keep in mind that there are many options today to maintain your identity but to still feel like a part of your spouse if that is what you would like to do.  Some popular options today include:
    1. i.      Retaining your maiden name as your middle name
    2. ii.      Hyphenating your maiden name and your spouse’s last name as your new last name

3)      What is the name change process?

  1. The act of getting married allows you to change your name so once you have your certified marriage certificate in hand then you can start changing your name.
  2. Start by notifying the Social Security Administration (SSA).  Fill out form SS-5 and while you can mail it in, we recommend that you visit your local SSA office to apply for the name change to avoid having to mail in original documents like your driver’s license and original marriage certificate.
  3. After applying for a name change with the SSA, inform your employer to ensure that your wages are posted correctly to your Social Security record.
  4. The SSA will then notify the IRS of the change but if your address has changed then you should notify the IRS by filling out form 8822.
  5. Next you should go in person to your local driver licensing division and apply for an updated driver’s license with your new name; note that while states don’t typically enforce this rule, many do require that you update your driver’s license within 30 days of having gotten married.  Some states also require that you apply for an updated driver’s license after 24-72 hours of notifying the SSA as they do verification with the SSA and other states require that you have an updated Social Security card in hand when applying.  The bottom line is that you should make sure you understand the rules in your state to save yourself a trip and to get it done the first time.
    1. i.      Note that Name Change Express does inform you of the specific rules for your state if you purchase our $30 package.
  6. Next you should notify other government agencies like for the US Passport Agency and Voter’s Registration.
  7. Lastly you should notify everyone else that you do business with.  This includes banks, credit card companies, insurance institutions, mortgage and other loan companies, investment providers, utilities, medical providers, loyalty programs, professional licenses, communications and entertainment, memberships, and subscriptions.
  8. Many people that are changing their names end up with 25-30 organizations that they must inform so we recommend that you start building a list of who you must inform even before you get married; that way, you’ll have a very complete list when you’re ready to start and won’t be stuck when you forget to update an airline for example but then end up traveling on it (it can be a real hassle to try to get frequent flyer mileage credit after the fact).
    1. i.      You can use the Name Change Express site to build this list at no cost to you.

4)      What sets NCE apart from other name changing companies?

  1. We believe several key areas set us apart from other name change services:
    1. i.      1 – We’re the only name change service that provides company-specific name change requirements for 100’s of companies across the U.S.;  this includes companies like Citibank, American Express, Geico, United Airlines and many, many more.  We let clients who purchase the $30 service know exactly what these companies require to process their name, where they have to mail notification letters, and what documents must be included.  Our clients love this aspect of our service as it really sets us apart from our competitors.  We’ve even had clients email us saying that because of this one feature alone that even though they purchased a competitor’s service, they ended up switching to us.
      1. And if we don’t already have a company in our database that a client needs to inform, clients can submit the company to us, we’ll research it and make it available quickly.
      2. ii.      2 – We strongly believe in the freemium model, where companies encourage potential clients to try out services at no cost to the client.  We are the only name change service that allows brides to do this and have set up our service to allow brides and others wanting to change their name to receive a free personalized guidebook to get started with their name change with the relevant federal agencies.  The guidebook includes all of the instructions and forms they’ll need to get started.  Overall clients have been very satisfied with our free package and many choose to upgrade to our $30 service.
      3. iii.      3 – We don’t request or collect any sensitive information on the website.  Information like account numbers and social security numbers are never asked for on the website.  Instead, we’ve built patent-pending technology in the PDF guidebook that you download that allows you to enter your sensitive information one time and have it propagated to all of the forms and notification letters that requires it.  In fact, you don’t even have to be connected to the web while entering this information.  We believe this is the best way to protect your privacy and identity: to simply not ask for it.

5)      What trends are you seeing in name changing?

  1. For our clients, the most popular option is for brides to retain their maiden name as their middle name.
  2. We also have some clients that choose to hyphenate their maiden name and spouse’s last name.
  3. Additionally, one of the most interesting trends we’ve seen, though small in number, is that we’ve seen married men choosing to change their last names to their wife’s last name.

6)      Many women are deciding not to change their name. Why do think some women still change their name?

  1. It’s certainly true that many women are deciding not to change their name but recent studies show that about 90% of women still do change their last name after marriage.
  2. In speaking with our clients and others getting married, women seem to still want to change their name for multiple reasons:
    1. i.      Some women feel more ‘connected’ by sharing a name with their spouse; we hear again and again of stories of women who simply can’t wait to become Mrs. HisLastName.  Some have been even dreaming of this since their early school days when they were doodling Mrs. So and So.
    2. ii.      Some women choose to change their name for convenience, especially with children so kids are not confused about two different last names; also kids’ schools can sometimes also get confused when dealing with parents with different last names.
    3. iii.      Other women change their name as they feel that their spouse’s last name may be better than their own and some women see this as a way to ‘get rid’ of a terrible last name.

7)      In the wake of gay marriage legalization in several states, how are you adapting your services to be inclusive to same-sex couples?

  1. In those states where gay marriage has been legalized, newlywed couples should have no issue using our service in that all of the instructions and forms we provide are applicable since these couples receive a government-issued marriage certificate, which is required by the SSA to update a name on their records.
  2. We have been in touch with the SSA and they have verified that couples with this in hand or even a domestic partnership certificate should have no issue updating their name with the SSA, which is really the first place to start.
  3. However, in practice, some same sex-couples may run into issues at their local SSA office as not all offices are aware of the procedures to follow in such cases.  But couples should ask to speak to a manager if they do run into issues and feel rest assured that they have met the requirements of the SSA to change their name when they have a government-issued marriage certificate in hand.
  4. Couples who live in states that have not legalized same-sex marriage can consider going to court to apply for a name change.  Once they have a court order in hand, they are also fully able to utilize the Name Change Express service to subsequently update their name with the SSA and other government agencies and to then inform all of the organizations they do business with.

8)      What’s next for NCE?

  1. Since we launched a few months ago, our main focus right now is to simply get the word out.  We want newlyweds to know that there’s a much simpler way to go about changing their names.  We’d like to save them the hassle of managing multiple identities by helping them to get their name change done quickly with everyone that needs to know.  This is our primary focus right now.
  2. We’re also very focused on continually improving the services we offer to make the entire name change process easier for newlyweds.

9)      Is there anything else you would like engaged couples to know about NCE?

  1. The founders and management team are deeply committed to making the overall name change experience for newlyweds as hassle-free as possible so we continually strive to improve the services we offer.
  2. For more information on the services we offer and how to officially change your name, please visit the website at:  www.NameChangeExpress and view the short video.

It was a cold day in NY again…and I happened to be watching a special on WE Entertainment…the topic…their top 10 unforgettable wedding venues, hosted by David Tutera {who also happens to be my favorite celebrity wedding planner}…for those who didn’t see the show I wanted to share their fabulous finds…Here goes!

No. 10 – La Quinta Spa Resort – California

For a Spanish style wedding plan your special day at La Quinta Spa Resort. Gretta Garbo & Ginger Rogers were both married at this old Hollywood style wedding setting. With it’s 800 Spanish style rooms & 41 swimming pools, La Quinta is a dessert paradise with 305 days of incredible weather year round. There are several locations where you can have your wedding, whether indoors or outdoors in their beautiful courtyard.

No. 9 – Tavern on the Green – New York City

A truly New York City experience, Tavern on the Green is a hidden gem in the heart of Central Park. This glittery venue can be a sparkle amongst the hustle & bustle of the city. In 1934 it was turned into a restaurant from a shelter for sheep. It has 6 different rooms and the Crystal Room is a truly exquisite room with chandeliers that glitter in the night. You can also hold your cocktail hour outdoors in the garden courtyard, where the trees are all lit up with tiny lights. It’s truly a beautiful venue that can make any bride feel like a princess.

Next on the list is a place that holds for a more romantic, small & exclusive wedding. We go down south to the Keys…

No. 8 – Little Palm Island – Florida

Located on it’s own private island…Little Palm Island is truly a wonderful destination wedding location that will have your guests talking. It has 28 Bungalows & 2 Suites, and a magnifacent lagoon style pool. This island is perfect for a small destination wedding where your guests will feel like they are in a tropical paradise with no distractions {note: there are no phones or tv’s in any of the rooms & children under 16 are not permitted on the island}. You can have your intimate ceremony on the dock with water surrounding you & then head over to the terrace for an outdoor reception under the stars. Guests arrive by a private boat from the mainland & are greeted with rum punch to start the festivities. This place is actually MY favorite pick of the list!

But for those brides who want a less formal approach to their wedding WE took us to Sin City for a truly unique wedding option…

No. 7 – A Little White Chapel – Las Vegas

Sometimes brides don’t want the whole “hooplah’ when it comes to their ceremony, or the couple wants a more fun & spontaneous approach to their vows..A Little White Chapel would be your stop. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, this Drive Up OR Drive Thru wedding center actually has it all. They have a full service Wedding Salon where brides can stop in & pick from their hundreds of dresses to wear down the isle…or snazzy up your groom with a tux & finish your look off with their hair & makup services & rent one of their many available accessories. Don’t have time to do a full ceremony…drive your car through the “Tunnel of Love” & for $40 you & your fiance can get hitched in a matter of minutes! Talk about a time efficient bride! It may not be for everyone, but it’s a surely fun option!

No. 6 – Columbia Gorge Hotel – Oregon

Columbia Gorge Hotel has a beautiful outdoor setting that overlooks the Columbia River. The historic hotel was built in 1921 and is considered the Waldorf of the West. Providing brides with either a scenic outdoor wedding ceremony area or an indoor fireplace area, this venue is a great place for a more outdoors, rustic {although the hotel is far from rustic} type of bride. The hotel has an English Garden feel to it and also has a waterfall that can provide for a wonderful backdrop.

No. 5 – Walt Disney World Resort Weddings – Florida

For the bride who truly wants to feel like a princess on her wedding day, Walt Disney World offers numerous packages & offers to brides who want that fairytale feeling for her special day. David Tutera has also teamed up with Disney…and customized 4 couture looks that brides can pick to have on their wedding day. There are many romantic venues to pick from…such as an aquarium, a grand ballroom or wedding on a private island that overlooks Cinderella’s Castle! Their bridal studio can help you customize your entire look down to every little detail.

The next venue is perfect for the weather we are currently experiencing…up next…a winter wonderland…

No. 4 – Cordillera Lodge Resort – Colorado

Sitting 8200 feet high above the Rocky Mountains, Vail Valley nestled on a secluded cliff sits Cordillera Lodge Resort..This place feels like a home away from home type of venue…for a cozy intimate not overly stuffy smaller wedding, this place is it. You can have a cocktail reception near the fireplace & then situate yourself in the reception room overlooking the mountains. They also have a gazebo should you choose to have an outdoor wedding ceremony sitting high above the clouds. It has breathtaking views & a  cozy feel.

No. 3 – The Grand Del Mar – California

Want to have a European feel to your wedding, but can’t bring your entire party there? Well with The Grand Del Mar you don’t have to travel very far. The hotel was completed in 2007 & it’s architectural wonder takes you to Spain, Morocco, Italy & the Mediterranean. It holds a 21,000 wine cellar & offers culinary sophistication to their guests & events. It has a Tuscan feel to the property & the landscaping brings you to a far away land. I would say this venue is perfect for the sophisticated bride who wants her guests to experience culinary & visual excellence.

No. 2 – Four Seasons Lana’i at Manele Bay Resort – Hawaii

This place has to be one of the top beach destination weddings out there. It’s absolutely incredible views will make for an unforgettable wedding. It used to be a pineapple plantation before it was turned into this high end resort. The wonderful thing about this place is that it holds only 1 wedding at a time, so the bride & groom will always feel like they are top priority. You can have your ceremony on the cliff with the panoramic ocean views {if you decide to have your wedding between November – January, you & your guests might catch a glimpse of whales in the distance}. Should you decide to have a beach ceremony, but want a more countryside reception, Four Seasons has another location that you can have your reception at, thus providing two very different experiences for your special day.

And last but not least…WE Entertainment & David Tutera’s No. 1 most Unforgettable Wedding Venue is….

Oheka Castle – Long Island, New York

For an experience like no other…having your very own castle to hold your truly spectacular event will truly be a special treat for your guests. Not only are the grounds amazing, but the inside of this Luxury Hotel/Castle will leave all your guests thinking that they have stepped back in time. Also…for brides you will also know that your event will be the only one taking place for the night. Your guests can wander around the castle & then for those who choose to stay the night, they can rest up in one of their 32 guest rooms. Oheka Castle will make any couple feel like a King & Queen for the day.

So there you have it…Top 10 Unforgettable Wedding Venues according to We Entertainment & David Tutera. I have to say that out of all places…Palm Island would be my pick…what’s yours?

{images from resort websites}

As a Wedding Planner my clients are always asking me about ways they can honor their guests if they are traveling. The answer is usually Goodies Bags left at the Hotels the guests are staying at. As someone who has also been on the other side and received a bag upon check-in it’s really appreciated and quite a treat….I mean who doesn’t like to come back to the hotel room and maybe after a few cocktails have a little midnight snack?

But one of the hardest parts is figuring out what to put in those bags…and how to possibly package them…and maybe a novel little trinket that your guests will remember their visit to a specific area. Well…Sara’s Gracious Goodies takes all the guessing work out of this detail for brides. Not only does she couple great snacks & beverages together…but she also does themed bags that can represent a great city such as New York (and it’s not because this is where I’m from & reside)…or a winter wedding!

And don’t think it’s just snacks that you’ll get in these goodie packages…one of my favorite ones is the NYC Treat, which includes 2 Lil Poland Spring Waters , Weekly edition of NY Magazine , NYC Traffic Treats, I LOVE NY Chocolates, Large Black and White Cookie , Kettle Korn Popcorn from The Hampton Popcorn Factory & Chocolate Chip Cookies from Tates Bakery…And they can be packaged inside your choice of a Map Tote (Queens, Bronx, NYC, Manhattan or Brooklyn)…How much more NYC can you get!? Fabulous and your guests will absolutely love it!

Her ideas bring a little more of a high end quality & representation to the classic hotel guest bag. Prices for the goodies range from $10 – $38 per package & then $10 per tote. However, if you don’t want to pay for the tote, atleast you can purchase the goodies and go with a less expensive route of a colorful paper bag from PaperMart (a great wholesale priced supplies store).

Great find…and great bargain…without the hassle!

Whether you’re a bride or a wedding consultant, planning a wedding is never an easy job (even though for most it’s certainly a labor of love). But now there are a few new Web-based tools that can help both more easily manage details and stay on top of their events.
My Wedding Workbook is an online wedding software for engaged couples that’s easy-to-use, comprehensive and lets bride and groom manage their budgets, guest lists, calendars and details for every wedding-related event – from the engagement party and bridal shower through the ceremony and reception to the honeymoon. And because its basic planning tools are free, it has become one very popular Web-based wedding planner with brides.
Not only does it provide tools for consultants to manage their contacts, vendors and calendar, but it provides comprehensive tools to manage any wedding event and provides a wealth of reports to help planners stay orgainzed. With packages starting at $19/month, it offers something for every size of business. And as an added bonus, consultants are able to share areas of the software with their clients to review details with them.
There are very few software out there that I would promote but I’ve been extremely impressed with what they offer. So if you need some organization that you can bring with you wherever you have internet access or a computer, MyWeddingWorkbook & MyWeddingWorkbookPro is a software & site that you have to check out.

A few months ago Ada Greenberg, of CupEcakes , paid me a visit with some delicious samples of her Vegan/Organic Cupcakes. I was a little skeptical with how tasty & moist they were going to be considering the vegan ingredients…but I have to say I pleasantly surprised at how delicious, fluffy & tasty they were.

All her cupcakes are made-to-order and are a fantastic favor idea for a wedding or any event really. She also has a cupcake kit where you can decorate them yourself and package it.  And if cupcakes aren’t your thing, then try her tasty cookies & muffins.

I also love the fact that she creates in “mini” versions too…package 2 mini cupcakes in a clear box & matching color scheme ribbon. Ada creates the packaging for you or you can purchase the kits for a DIY project.

Delicious creations such as:

Viola Vanilla Crunch: Vanilla cake, coconut frosting, topped with shredded coconut (Also available in chocolate cake)

Patty Kake: Chocolate cake, mint frosting, topped with chocolate ganache

I highly recommend her products because they are absolutely delicious…and being a foodie & a fanatical Cupcake lover I know your guests will enjoy them as much as I did…

JetSetSweethearts: Niagara

Niagara Falls: One of the world’s most famous natural attractions, is also North America’s #1 Honeymoon Destination! I was here with my family when I was just five year old, but after a recent trip with my husband, I can see why. The falls are quite a sight from far away, or even in pictures. But, the rush you get when you can walk right near them or hop on a boat and ride right up to them is awesome. It truly is an amazing feeling to be with the one you love and hold on to each other as you get thrown around on the boat as it nears the falls. (If you get sea sick easily, you might want to skip the boat ride) It’s also such a sight as you watch the water crash over cliffs that are more than 20 stories high. There are three falls that make up Niagara Falls: The American Falls, The Bridal Veil Falls (how appropriate is that my jet set sweethearts? Myth says it’s good luck if a bride dips her toe in the Bridal Veil Falls on her Wedding Day), and finally the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. There are many attractions and things to do in and around the falls. My top suggestion is a ride on the Maid of the Mist. What used to be a border-crossing ferry from the 1800’s is now a tour boat that gets you as close as humanly possible to the falls. They do provide you with blue rain jackets, but the spray from the falls is so strong that you might end up either a little wet or soaked by the end of the half hour boat ride.

Journey Behind the Falls are rock tunnels which have been carved out right behind the falls. Take a walk and find yourself behind a wall of water so thick it blocks out daylight…pretty cool!

Just downstream from the falls are the Whirlpool Rapids. It’s considered one of the most lethal stretches of water in North America. If you are brave enough, you can take a ride in the Whirpool Aero Car (see picture below)- a cable car built in 1913 that takes you for a ride over the rapids as you look straight down onto them…scary! If you need a break from the falls, head to Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens. Located just six miles away, you will feel a world away as you get a chance to check out the beautiful flower display with more than 2,ooo varieties. Many people don’t know or don’t think about the Niagara Region as a great destination for wineries…but, in fact, there are many here. We checked out the Pillitteri Estates Winery which has good Riesling and Merlot, but is better known for it’s Canadian Ice Wine- a very sweet and delicious dessert wine or great to pair with salty cheese and crackers. So now that you know a little bit about Niagara Falls as a honeymoon destination, you may be thinking, where should we stay? Niagara Falls does have a lot of nice hotels, but I would suggest staying in a town called Niagara-On-The-Lake. This town was built in the 1800’s and is still as charming and historic as it was back then. There are great restaurants and shops, and you are close to all of the wineries and of course, Niagara Falls.

On occasion I come across a unique & talented vendor that I want my readers to become aware of. Pink Lily Press is exactly that…talented. I love the chic styles Jennifer creates (who started the business in 2007, and currently runs the business out of her townhouse). I’m always inspired by people who are inspired by what they love to do and start their own business in their homes.

So you may ask yourself “Ok, so what is Pink Lily Press?”…It’s handmade stationary, wedding invitations and “paper googies” as they coin it. Handmade, unique, chic and simple. She also sells her creations on

Here is a small sample of her beautiful creations…I like these type of vendors because as you design your event, it’s always nice to have unique details that other people may not know about…or have. I like the “exclusive” feel when I plan for my clients…Plus I love to support local artists!

She uses great quality paper and her designs are wonderful.

Hello Newly Engaged Couples…I am going to be holding a Wedding Planner Mixer essentially for anyone who’s getting married within the next year in the NY Tri-State Area and wants a Day of Coordinator for free. You can interview these planners and see if you click with anyone of them.

Please send me an email to if you are interested in attending. The Mixer will be held in Oceanside, NY either at the end of October or beginning of November.

I hope to see you there!

I love to travel….but then again who doesn’t? Part of being a smart traveler is really understanding the times to go, great local finds & those holes in the wall where the locals call home, and your stomach usually calls heaven.

So…want to get all that information in one smart spot? Visit one of my best friend’s Travel Blog: Jet Set Smart for incredible advice on traveling. Not only will she show you great obscure finds from all over the world, but she’ll give you ways to save more money the next time you travel.

She’s been all over the world…so she’s not one of those bloggers who writes about Paris and how great it is, but has never set their eyes on the majestic beauty of the Eiffel Tower. She’s a smart traveler because she know about these places from experience and not just some hokey travel guide you find in your local airport.

So go ahead and check her website out…whether it’s to plan your honeymoon, babymoon or just get away from it all. JetSetSmart your way to her site…I know you’ll love it!
